Norcal Veteran Coder Built his Dream Off-Grid House



Loren Amelang once helped code for Silicon Valley companies, but he'd always been sensitive to environment so when his employer installed fluorescent lighting and wouldn't let employees use their own lights, he decided to move to the country and craft his off-grid dream home.

Today he lives with "clean air, a great view, free hot water and free power, and a decent chunk of free heat". The entire south side of his home is covered in solar capture devices: 1600 watts of photovoltaic power, solar hot water panels, a sunroom/greenhouse and a solar hot air collector. The sunroom/greenhouse provides most of the free heat via the 'solar flue' that moderates it in warmer weather or circulates some of it into the house when needed, and the concrete walls that stabilize the temperature over time.

Putting his technical skills to use (he's a pioneer in C++ programming), Amelang wrote over 10,000 lines of code so that his home's water and electric systems could be operated remotely, by even just an iPhone.

Since he built most of the home himself (the person he hired to do it decades ago, spent all the money and built half the house), Amelang has made it very custom. He avoided using aluminum and plastic (except for the insulation on the wiring) and he wired it for pure DC lighting (which makes sense with solar, but Amelang also likes how "peaceful" DC lighting feels).

Building on his own terms means that Amelang created a home that doesn't look or feel like anyone else's, but it works well and makes sense. For instance, he designed an audio system where you can "walk around in the sound space and feel where you are" and a central locking system for all exterior doors so that when he leaves the house he doesn't have to lock 12 different doors, but just turns one key and they all lock.

Google took few people for a test drive in their self-driving car, and it is fully Electric ! - of course -



" Fully autonomous driving has always been the goal of our project, because we think this could improve road safety and help lots of people who can't drive.

AESC LEAF Battery Modules - Making a Charge Controller 2

As soon as I got back from Marseille, I dove into my LEAF / AESC Battery Modules Charge Controller project and started wiring the 2 Tyco Kilovac Contactors to the Dual Relay Programmable Voltmeter already installed 10 days ago ....



Crimping first


I start with a ON OFF ON switch to Charge or Discharge, or OFF




Let's add a fuse, always better, and solder its holder here


and get through the terminal numbers in the back for the relays

Discharge / Grid Tie Inverter side Kilovac in place


GTI is active and pushing 250W into our home grid


Lower limit reached, the voltmeter opens its lower relay, which removes power to the Kilovac, which opens the DC line removing power to the Grid Tie Inverter, and the Discharge is stopped


Lower voltmeter LED is lit, indicating we reached the lower limit of the pack voltage


And now I have Automatic Cut Off at low voltage, 3.60V per half module or 21.6V for the pack of 3 modules (= 6 half modules)



After testing this, the next day, I wired the Charger side Kilovac, protection over charge, and stopping at 24.9V for the pack, which is 4.15V per half module

Let's start the charge now ...



I just finished this first controlled Charge tonight:



Once we reach the set 24.9V for this 3 module pack (= 6 half modules x 4.15V), the voltmeter opens its upper limit relay, cutting power to the Tyco Kilovac contactor, opening the charge lead and stopping the charge => Simple and Efficient !



Note the upper limit LED on the Voltmeter and the Green right LED on the Charger (a LiFePO4 24V 10A) showing the end of Charge; Now after 10s, the voltage has gone down a bit and will stay there


So now I don't have to stay next to my AESC / LEAF pack, since a Charge and a Discharge will be terminated automatically thanks to this set up :-)

The utility grid is aging and outages are increasing. The U.S. experienced 679 major weather-related power outages between 2003 – 2012, including 7 of the 10 costliest storms in American history. At the same time, while overall electricity usage in the U.S. has increased only modestly since 2001—approximately 10 percent according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration—utility revenues have increased more than 50 percent in the same time period.*

Utilities have increased revenues faster than electricity usage in part by creating “demand charges” for businesses that have increased their share of the utilities’ cost burden. Some utilities are basing rates less on the overall amount of electricity consumed, and more on “peak demand”, i.e. the maximum amount of electricity used at a specific point in time. Solar power can significantly offset the overall amount of electricity used by organizations, but if an organization’s “peak” electricity demand is still high during the day—in the late afternoon, for example—the organization can be hit with high demand charges. SolarCity’s commercial storage system regulates the amount of electricity that organizations need from the grid during “peak” periods, reducing exposure to exorbitant demand charges.
