SF based Startup builds Amazing Electric Skateboards !




The hoverboard is finally being developed off-screen (though the prototype’s reliance on magnets means it’s not currently a transport solution), but there are boards on the market right now that nearly float up hill. Electric skateboards are piggybacking on the battery tech of electric cars to provide a powerful ride for even San Francisco style hills.

The founders of Boosted Boards (one of several electric skateboard startups) was founded by three robotics graduate students who wanted to get around the sprawling Stanford campus faster than their longboards could take them. They began to tinker with “really powerful motors for robotics”, were eventually mentored by a Tesla engineer and opened up shop in Silicon Valley to take advantage of the local EV tech.

The boards aren’t meant to replace skateboards, but the Boosted founders see them as an alternative to the car. “We know that most of our trips are under five miles so we know that a vehicle like this is going to be fine for most of these trips,” explains Boosted founder Matthew Tran. “The biggest advantage at this point is that it’s portable. In the city a lot of times I want to get around on CalTrain or a bus or just jump into an Uber and I can carry this board with me to any of those places.”

The boards are controlled by a Bluetooth handset, can reach speeds of 22 miles per hour, run 7 miles on a charge (1.5 hour recharge time), provide regenerative braking and weigh 13.5 to 15 pounds (depending on the model).

DIY ESS - First 5 Arduino Leonardo boards received - First one flashed & ready to ship

5 Arduino Leonardo boards have arrived from Evola.fr website faster than I thought and one of them is already flashed with the DIY ESS program, from the Mac this time

LiFePO4 ESS - User settings can be modified and saved in the EEPROM

Users can now change Variables in my DIY ESS program and save them in the EEPROM for the next runs; This is a major enhancement and I think it will be usefull


If necessary, the users will be able to plug their Mac or PC to the Arduino board via a regular USB cable and see the log displayed by the program


If some of the frequency, sensitivity, thresholds need to be adjusted, it can be done using a simple code letter and value:

i.e.: 'd100' + Enter will change the delay between two readings from the original 50ms to 100ms, and if this is happens to be a good value for the behaviour of his ESS, the user can save it typing 'save' + Enter

The modified value(s) will then be located in the Arduino's EEPROM (Read Only Memory) and will reside there even if the power is switched Off, for the next runs

At start up, the ESS arduino board program will read values stored in the EEPROM and use them 

Typing 'config' + Enter, the program will display all the variables stored in the EEPROM

This week end, I adjusted the Muji plastic case / box to the borad and cu tthe necessary openings to let the cables and switches pass through it

I worked late last night on my LiFePO4 ESS:

These two relays will replace this main switch that was used for Charge - OFF - GTI

LiFePO4 ESS - New Control Board Design

Well, that was a busy - rainy- sunday yesterday and my knees are still hurting from spending the day working on the new version - V2 - of my LiFePO4 ESS project

New ideas:
- Get rid of the outlets !
- Make it more compact (for that I went to my basement and dug out a Bordeaux 6 bottle wooden box and used the smallest side) and ready to receive an enclosure (steel box)
- Automate Charger side with the Arduino too
- More controls: Auto Mode, Forced Charge, Reset/Restart, ...
- More Status Lights ...


It's gonna be tight ...
