SF based Startup builds Amazing Electric Skateboards !




The hoverboard is finally being developed off-screen (though the prototype’s reliance on magnets means it’s not currently a transport solution), but there are boards on the market right now that nearly float up hill. Electric skateboards are piggybacking on the battery tech of electric cars to provide a powerful ride for even San Francisco style hills.

The founders of Boosted Boards (one of several electric skateboard startups) was founded by three robotics graduate students who wanted to get around the sprawling Stanford campus faster than their longboards could take them. They began to tinker with “really powerful motors for robotics”, were eventually mentored by a Tesla engineer and opened up shop in Silicon Valley to take advantage of the local EV tech.

The boards aren’t meant to replace skateboards, but the Boosted founders see them as an alternative to the car. “We know that most of our trips are under five miles so we know that a vehicle like this is going to be fine for most of these trips,” explains Boosted founder Matthew Tran. “The biggest advantage at this point is that it’s portable. In the city a lot of times I want to get around on CalTrain or a bus or just jump into an Uber and I can carry this board with me to any of those places.”

The boards are controlled by a Bluetooth handset, can reach speeds of 22 miles per hour, run 7 miles on a charge (1.5 hour recharge time), provide regenerative braking and weigh 13.5 to 15 pounds (depending on the model).

The US DOE publishes a website to track Energy Storage Projects


"The DOE International Energy Storage Database provides free, up-to-date information on grid-connected energy storage projects and relevant state and federal policies. All information is vetted through a third-party verification process."


You can refine your search with Technology Type, Location, etc 


For example: with Battery, in France I found two Porjetcs:
- One in Brittany, based on Sodium Sulfur Batteries, providing 1GW for 7:12 :

and a Second One in French Riviera, Nice, based on Lithium-ion (what exact technology of li-ion ?), providing 1GW also, but for 30mn only

Maybe I should try and add my DIY ESS
It is small, BUT, if 500 families install this kind of system at home, they would provide also 1GW of power for several hours, captured from solar or/and wind, produced locally ...

Rebirth Auto made 10 VW adaptor plates for the Siemens 100kW Ac motor: Jack will use one in his Thing project and the rest will be available online 


Here is the VW Thing, it has been cleaned up, repainted in deep yellow, ready for conversion to electric drive

Now Jack wants to put this motor and controller in the Thing

Battery boxes for the Thing are ready and installed partially; Higher voltage required by this "new" drive train, so Jack will use more cells of smaller capacity, the CALB CA60FI

Then Jack goes into the details on charging and discharging cells, talks about the Boing Dreamliner, a  100,000,000 USD brand new plane with battery packs big problems, simply because the cells get over charged (they swell, and nothing abnormal was found by investigators !)


He also mentionned that the Chevy Volt and the Nissan LEAF battery packs are both under charged, to prevent cells damages ... What a coincidence !
